Expert advice: How to support your dog's joints

Top tips from Veterinary Physiotherapist, Sarah

Veterinary Physiotherapist, SarahWe’ve teamed up with Physiotherapist, Sarah from PAW to share her expert tips for keeping your dog’s joints healthy, mobile, and comfortable. Whether your dog has a condition like arthritis, hip or elbow dysplasia, or you simply want to be proactive in their care, Sarah’s practical advice covers everything from simple daily habits to long-term joint support.

  1. Keep them moving - Regular movement is better than long rest days. Even if your dog can only manage 5–10 minutes, try several short walks throughout the day rather than one long one. Consistency is key – avoid big changes in duration between weekday and weekend walks to prevent strain.
  2. Warm up and cool down - Just like athletes, dogs benefit from warming up their muscles before exercise and cooling down afterwards. Start with 10 minutes on the lead or gentle exercises like sit-to-stands, and finish walks with a slower, on-lead stroll before resting. This helps prevent muscle strain and supports long-term joint health.
  3. Make your home joint-friendly - Slippery floors can be tough on joints. Add rugs or carpet runners for grip, raise food and water bowls to reduce strain on the front legs, and invest in an orthopaedic bed that offers supportive comfort without being too soft or too hard.
  4. Consider natural joint supplements - Sarah often recommends MoveWellia® and JointWell® to her customers for additional herbal joint support. MoveWellia® is expertly formulated with Boswellia to help maintain comfort, ease stiffness, and support long-term mobility – ideal for active dogs or those slowing down. Whereas JointWell® provides everyday joint care with key nutrients to support cartilage, flexibility, and overall joint health, keeping dogs moving comfortably at every stage of life. Both can help maintain comfort and mobility when used alongside a good exercise and home care routine.
  5. Consistency makes the difference - Small, consistent actions can have a big impact on your dog’s mobility and comfort. If you notice changes like reluctance to jump, stiffness, or slowing down, speak to your vet or physiotherapist for tailored advice.
