How to calm a dog down

How to calm a dog down

Amy Matthews |

When fireworks are lighting up the sky, and your dog is pacing, barking, trembling, or hiding under furniture many of us ask "How can I calm my dog down?"

While it's great to take preventive steps ahead of time, there are moments when our dogs need calming right then and there. So, what can you do to help when your dog is already feeling overwhelmed?

Gentle touch and reassurance

Sometimes, your dog just needs to know you’re there. A slow, steady hand can work wonders. Long, gentle strokes along their back or sides, combined with a calm, reassuring voice, can make a world of difference. If your dog is a snuggler who loves being close, sitting with them on the floor or curling up together on the sofa can offer them reassurance. Just being near you — whether it's by their bed or cuddling can help them feel safe and protected. Dogs pick up on our energy, so if you stay calm, it’ll help them feel more secure too.

Lick mats and chew toys

If your dog is in full panic mode, giving them something to chew on or lick can have an instant calming effect. Lick mats covered with their favourite treat or a chew toy filled with tasty snacks can distract them, while also encouraging natural soothing behaviours. The simple act of licking or chewing can help calm down your dog, plus it gives them something else to focus on besides those loud bangs outside.

Compression wraps / Thundershirts

Have you heard of the snug, comforting effect of a compression wrap? These nifty garments apply gentle pressure around your dog’s body, almost like a reassuring hug. If you pop one on during a stressful moment, it can help reduce their anxiety, making them feel more grounded and secure.

Soothing music

Music can do more than just set the mood for us — it can be a calming force for your dog too. If the fireworks are booming, try playing some calming music or white noise. Specially designed dog playlists or classical tunes can help lower stress, helping them relax when the outside world feels a bit too overwhelming.

Distraction techniques

When your dog is anxious, engaging them in low energy games or gentle training can work wonders. Simple commands like 'sit' or 'stay,' paired with a tasty treat, can help distract them from their fear. Playing with their favourite toy or gently encouraging them to find hidden snacks around the house can shift their focus in a positive, low-energy way, keeping their mind engaged, without overstimulating them.

Fast-acting calming supplements

If you have our Scullcap & Valerian Tablets or Valerian Compound on hand, these supplements can also help calm your dog down when you need it the most!

Typically we recommend giving Scullcap & Valerian Tablets 3 weeks before stressful events, such as firework season to see effective results. Although, when given with our fast-acting Valerian Compound, the specially selected active herbs can help reduce stress, fear and anxiety in your pet.

For fast results, our Valerian Compound is specifically formulated to act quickly! Containing pure extracts of three calming herbs, this liquid ensures rapid absorption, delivering calming effects within just 30 minutes. Plus, for added comfort, you can place a few drops on their bed or blankets to help them relax while they rest in their familiar space.

*Please be aware Valerian Compound is an oil and can stain bedding

Until 5th November 2024, receive 25% off Scullcap & Valerian Tablets and Valerian Compound when bought together as a calming combo, available from sizes S to XXL. Simply use promo code FIREWORKS24 at checkout!
