With the leaves now falling from the trees the winter months are just around the corner.
The colder months can often highlight several common ailments which may have been laying dormant throughout the summer months, such as stiff joints and mobility problems. In some cases the winter may also affect your dog’s pigmentation which can be a real issue when it’s a prize-winning show dog.
We have listed a few of the most common winter ailments below and for which our herbal products can be used to help your dog, whether it’s a show champion, working dog or family pet.
Antifreeze
Antifreeze is poisonous to dogs, do not any leak onto the driveway when topping up your car.
Arthritis and stiff joints
Often as the weather starts to get colder and damper it can reveal joint problems, as the weather can often play a significant role in these types of problems. Many dogs may simply show signs of taking longer to get up after a long rest or limping or licking swollen joints. There is a difference between a joint disease such as Arthritis and the more common mobility problems that are due to age. Arthritis can be identified by x-rays or may be diagnosed by your vet. Our herbal supplements Garlic & Fenugreek Tablets and Green Releaf® are used to help this condition and they can also be a fantastic combination for general health as well and they are particularly ideal for older dogs. In cases where you just feel your dog may need some support for the joints our Glucosamine & Chondroitin Tablets are commonly used to maintain joint health and flexibility. The main benefits of this product is that it enhances the body’s ability to manufacture collagen and proteoglycans, essential for rebuilding joint cartilage and increasing synovial fluid to lubricate the joints.
Christmas Catastrophes
Holly and poinsettia are poisonous to dogs, so always keep these plants out of reach.
Groom your pet
A well maintained coat is a well insulated coat. Short haired breeds feel the cold more, a blanket, coat or even a old sweater may be needed to keep them warm.
Pigmentation
The most common contributing factor which causes lack of pigmentation in dogs is lack of sunlight, however following a bitch’s season and also dietary deficiencies can play a role also. The problem is often referred to as ‘Snow Nose’ or ‘Winter Nose’ as it often occurs in the winter months. There are several ways to improve this problem by adding products which are high in iodine and minerals such as Kelp Seaweed Tablets or Powder or use our Elderberry & Nettle Extract which may be faster acting in many cases.
Paw problems
Sore foot pads can also occur in the colder months especially if walking in ice and snow, so after a long walk in such conditions be sure to check your pooch’s feet. Remove any debris, ice or snow that you find between his toes, and if his paws are dirty, wash and dry them thoroughly. If they appear unduly dry, scaly or damaged apply our soothing Skin Balm until all signs of soreness and dryness have disappeared. Cuts and deep wounds will require a visit to the vet.
