If your dog (or cat) has an upset stomach, symptoms can vary from the occasional windy tummy to diarrhoea, pancreatic insufficiency or something more serious. The most important point is if you are at all concerned please visit a veterinary professional for expert advice. This will allow anything serious to be diagnosed, treated or even ruled out.
Dog supplements such as the Dorwest Herbs Tree Barks Powder work as a digestive aid for dogs to reduce acute intestinal absorptive disorders, compensate for maldigestion and chronic pancreatic insufficiency. Tree bark can also be used during periods of, and recovery from, acute diarrhoea. Here are 5 reasons why we recommend Tree Barks Powder for dogs when they have an upset tummy.
1. Pure slippery elm for dogs
The Dorwest Tree Barks Powder for dogs consists of just 2 ingredients, 90% finely powdered slippery elm bark and 10% white poplar bark. We use absolutely no fillers and the quality of these two ingredients meet the European Herbal Pharmacopoeia standards. We source both ingredients from their native home in North America.

2. The special way in which it works!
This fine fluffy powder is very mucilaginous or glutinous. This means that when you mix it in with a fluid such as water or becomes almost blancmange like, hence the name ‘slippery’ elm. Our Dorwest Tree Barks Powder coats and soothes the digestive tract and stomach (emollient action) as it moves through the system. This helps support the absorption of nutrients, firming stools and easing discomfort.
3. Perfect for pups all the way to the veterans
Slippery elm powder is one of the many well-known natural supplements for dogs and has been used for years both as a digestive aid for dogs and for weaning puppies or kittens. Not only to ensure they get the very best out of any food they are eating but also because tree bark is incredibly nutritious in its own right.
4. Easy to give
Our Tree Barks Powder can easily be mixed into their normal food, or even mix it into some live yoghurt for a natural pro-biotic too. We also have had a customer making little ‘honey balls’ with it, great if your pet has a sweet tooth or is a little fussy!
5. Flexibility
Tree bark for dogs can help your pet whether their digestive issue is a one off (often due to something they shouldn’t have eaten!). It is also an ideal digestive aid for dogs if they struggle intermittently with non-specific digestive issues. Keep a tub in the house to have ready to use when it is necessary or give regularly to keep everything under control. Either way, Dorwest Tree Barks Powder is essential for the dog cupboard!

Hi is it ok to mix with a little kefir and a bit of honey to help settle gurgling tummies and acid reflux in dogs ?
You can certainly mix the Tree Barks Powder with some kefir and honey, as these should be soothing for the digestive system as well.
I give my dog a combined pro and pre biotic and digestive enzymes in his raw food diet. He still is frantically eating grass until he passes his stools, which are more or less normal, though occasionally too hard and occasionally too slimy (less so since giving supplements). Should I give this in addition to the digestive enzymes and Pre/probiotics, or instead?
Hi Suzanne – Our Tree Barks Powder helps slow the passing of food, ensuring they are getting all the nutrients from their food and firming stools so this could be a good option to add to his food. Sometimes they an be eating grass because they are lacking something in their diet so another one we'd recommend is our Keeper's Mix which contains 8 herbs each supporting vital organs, skin, coat and joints. This is also a great all-round health boost and ensures they're getting all the vitamins and minerals they need.
Hi can dogs be allergic to tree bark powder as I’ve been giving it her for over a week she started sneezing a lot and has a watery eye then a week later she started with the runs again
Hi Jim – This isn't something we have come across before however I have passed your details onto our team and they will be in touch. Thank you!
I have a four year old British bulldog that has severe allergies over the past 7 months I have changed him to a raw food diet after much research and all natural tonics / vitamins which are working amazingly and turned his life around. Unfortunately due to his allergies he had severe problems with his anal glands of which the vet insisted should be expressed by him each week ! Again after much research and heartache I realised this was not the answer . Unfortunately he has been left with extensive scarring due to this . Again by using natural treatment and getting his allergies under control naturally this is much better but has left him struggling most days to pass stools causing constipation. Can I use tree bark on a daily basis to help ease the passing of his stools or is this more for loose stools ?
We are sorry to hear that your British Bulldog has had problems with his anal glands. The Tree Barks Powder is designed to help firm up stools for those with stomach upsets or chronic digestive conditions, and also helps to soothe digestive discomfort, so we do not recommend giving it to those with constipation. Unfortunately, we currently do not have any products to help ease constipation.
Hi I started giving this too my two westies and it’s working given once a day in food how long do you give this too them please
Hi Mairetherese – Our Tree Barks Powder can be given daily long term or until their symptoms have passed. You can add this to their food as and when needed 🙂
Is this good for dogs that suffer colitis? My dog suffers with this condition every now and again (maybe twice a year)…. and could I give it daily as a supplement?
Hi Sue – Yes, our Tree Barks will help to soothe the digestive tract and increase the absorption of nutrients, firming the stools. This can be given daily long term or until their symptoms have passed. You can add this to their food as and when needed 🙂
