Recently our advice lines and show team have received a huge number of calls and visits from customers asking how can I improve my dog’s coat and pigmentation?
With winter just around the corner now is often the time coat condition suffers due to the weather and pigmentation can also reduce due to the lack of sunlight. Here are some tips and ideas on how we can help improve these problems with natural dog skin and coat supplements.
Coat Growth and Condition
There are a number of dog coat supplements to improve their condition, depending on what is required and the type of coat the breed may have.
Dorwest Keeper’s Mix® is always our first recommendation as it’s an all-round supplement that when given daily maintains a strong healthy thick coat and is particularly popular for gundogs and rough coated terriers, but can also improve any type of coat. Consisting of 8 different herbs and nothing else added, this combination makes sure your dog is getting everything he needs! There are plenty of ways to find out if your dog needs some more vitamins, or if this all-round, everyday health supplement could be beneficial, feel free to ask us!
Omega Star®. This combination of high-grade UK grown natural plant oils, provides high doses of essential Omega 3 & 6’s which helps the skin’s moisture barrier, improves coat growth and produces beautiful quality of coat.

This combination of Dorwest Keeper’s Mix® and Omega Star® have now become firm essentials for many top winning dogs. When these two dog skin and coat supplements are used together they have a great effect and are especially useful if your dog is coming back from a recent season or from a period of losing condition such as post whelping. Both products are fantastic when used together with the heavily coated breeds which have longer, softer coats.

Pigmentation
A drop in pigmentation may occur on the nose, eyes, and mouth during the winter months and in bitches following a season or pregnancy. This fading is generally considered to be due to a shortage of minerals, particularly iodine and iron. Our Elderberry & Nettle Extract is specifically formulated to assist with this issue as it has high natural levels of both these minerals and is also the fastest route to regaining pigmentation. This dog coat supplement is added to the feed daily and can be given at any time of year and with any feeding regime without affecting the dietary balance.
Alternatively, Kelp Seaweed Tablets or Powder may be used as these contain all the minerals and trace elements required by the body, including high iodine and iron content. Many people find it useful to give Kelp powder for dogs from autumn through to spring to help prevent a drop in pigment during the winter. Often, many owners have found that using Elderberry & Nettle Extract initially to regain the pigment is best and then to swap to Kelp tablets for dogs to maintain the pigment is a very useful way of managing the problem. If your dog doesn’t enjoy eating tablets, why not try our kelp powder for dogs.
It is necessary to give either product for a minimum of one month to enhance pigmentation that has been lost although it may take two or more months for it to be completely restored.

Will the Elderberry & Nettle help improve pigmentation (not replace lost pigmentation)? Looking to adopt a white dog who has quite a bit of pink around the eyes, ears & mouth. Looking to see if there is something to help increase/improve his pigmentation & lessen sensitivity to extreme heat & cold.
Thank you.
Hi Laura, The Elderberry & Nettle Extract is naturally rich in iron and iodine, and so can help to improve pigmentation 🙂 However, as pigmentation is often due to genetics, some pigmentation cannot be changed.
Whilst this product can help with poor pigmentation due to a lack of minerals or they have winter nose, it will not be able to change the genetics of the dog 🙁 If this was to be successful, it can take a minimum of 6 weeks to see improvement, following with the skin renewal process. Hi Samantha, if it is a pigmentation issue we would recommend our Elderberry & Nettle Extract or our Kelp Seaweed Tablets but it would be good to get a little bit more information so do give one of our advisors a call on 01308 897272 and they can help you futher- The Dorwest Team
what do u recommend for new born puppy in order to improve the pigmentation. Does UV lamp in early stages can assist or can cause any damage to the new born puppy.
Hello Yoel. Unfortunately we cannot comment on products that are not our own and all of our products cannot be given until the puppy is 8 weeks of age. As it is a pigment issue, it will be linked with genetics so it is therefore advisable to let the puppy grow before starting to think about giving pigmentation supplements. Any other questions do give us a call on 01308 897272.

Hi. My 2 year old whippet is losing hair on his back legs tummy and armpits. My vet started him on your searliest kelp 3 weeks ago. How long till I see a difference please? Thanks.
Hi Wendy – we recommend to give our products for at least 4 – 6 weeks in order to start seeing the full effects of the products. This time allows them to build up in the system, often you might see results quicker but it’s always best to give them a longer period just in case as every dog is different. If you don’t get the results you expect please do contact us directly either via phone or email so that we can talk through other options with you.
My 2 year old German Shepherd bitch has gradually been losing her black markings in her coat and is losing places in her show classes because of “lack of coat colour”. How can I improve and regain this black colour? Will your product help us? She is on fish oil capsules and Livermol daily but is far from the black puppy we bought. Her pedigree does not reflect a lack of colour. How much per bottle and for shipping to Australia?
