Turmeric is the latest wonder herb from Southern India, but a huge rise in popularity comes with conflicting information. If you are researching Turmeric Tablets for Dogs, here is the low-down on this golden spice from the experts at Dorwest Herbs.
1. What should you look for when choosing your turmeric for dogs?
Due to the huge surge in popularity, unfortunately, there are those wanting to make a ‘quick buck’ by selling low-quality produce. Turmeric has even been found to be mixed with other ingredients and artificially coloured. So, here are the top tips to consider before buying turmeric supplements for dogs:
• Make sure your dog’s turmeric tablets are from a reputable company.
• Check the turmeric has been identified using various testing methods (macroscopy, microscopy, DNA & HPTLC) and can be fully traceable – with tests carried out from the field to the end product.
• Turmeric for dogs must be of medicinal quality; culinary turmeric is produced for taste not the quality of the curcuminoid compounds.
• Check that it’s sustainable and grown using responsible practices.
• Look for standardised quantities of the curcuminoids (the active part of the root).
2. Can the body easily use it? How to effectively supplement turmeric in dog food
The bioavailability (the amount available to be used by the body) of curcumin is low. Curcumin is poorly absorbed into the body and is then rapidly metabolised and eliminated from the body. You can increase the bioavailability of curcumin for dogs with two methods.
• Ingesting a fatty substance at the same time as curcumin.
Or/and
• Eating it with a compound found naturally in black pepper – piperine.
One study has found that taking piperine along with Curcumin can increase its bioavailability by 2000%!
Dorwest Herbs Turmeric Tablets for Dogs contain piperine, so this source of curcumin for dogs is easily absorbed.

Turmeric is relatively easy to give to your pet, simply adding turmeric and curcumin supplements to your dog’s normal diet will provide enough of the fat needed for its absorption.
3. Are there side effects of turmeric for dogs?
Turmeric is thought amongst herbalists to be a very safe herb. Although, it is important to discuss its use with your veterinarian before you give it to your pet, especially if they are taking any medication or about to undergo elective surgery.
It’s important to note that turmeric reportedly has anti-coagulant properties which could exacerbate clotting disorders.
4. There’s a range of health benefits of turmeric for dogs!
Turmeric has become an increasingly popular health trend, and for good reason. Our Turmeric Tablets for Dogs have naturally occurring anti-inflammatory and pain relief properties. And with so many studies currently being undertaken, there are likely more health benefits of turmeric for dogs we are yet to find out – watch this space!
5. What is curcumin and is it important?
Turmeric’s Latin name is Curcuma longa. Its therapeutic properties have been widely attributed to its ‘curcuminoids’ compounds.
There are 3 main curcuminoids of which 80% of this is the most well-known ‘curcumin’. Curcumin is thought to be the ‘active’ part of the plant however it is important to note that the whole herb exhibits activities superior to curcumin alone.
Good quality turmeric and curcumin supplement for dogs will contain a standardised amount of curcuminoids of 95%.
Taking the whole herb means you not only get the curcuminoids but also all the other compounds that makeup turmeric. This corresponds with a widely held belief of herbal medicine called synergy, and qualified herbalists will usually always prescribe the whole herb rather than compounds extracted from it.

Hi I have a 4 year old Bullmastiff who has hip displasure and is now showing signs of stiffness when she stands up I keep her lean and well exercised do you think Turmeric Tablets would help
Hi Tracey – For Hip Dysplasia, we generally recommend the Glucosamine and Chondroitin Tablets as they help to support mobility and flexibility of the joints. The Turmeric Tablets can be beneficial for those with hip dysplasia when arthritic changes and/or inflammation in the joints so what we generally recommend is starting with the Glucosamine and Chondroitin Tablets to support early stiffness and then add in products such as the Turmeric Tablets when needed.
Hello, my westie 13 and 8 months is on Atopica 50, every second day. He also has cystitis at the moment. Would your product help? Thanks, Evelyn
Hi Evelyn – The Green Releaf Tablets may be helpful as they help to maintain a normal urinary flow and pH level so can benefit those with urinary problems. They also help to support skin health and soothe and calm irritated skin. The Garlic and Fenugreek Tablets may also be useful as it helps to support the immune system and increase resistance to minor infections, making it ideal for those with recurrent urinary and skin problems. The two products work particularly well together. If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01308 897272 or email advice@dorwest.com
I have a 13 . 5year old Bichon Frise who has just had ultra sound scan and given diagnosis of extensive liver and spleen tumours.. No treatment. Life expectancy 2/3 months. She remains very well in herself. No obvious problems. Would Golden Paste treatment be of any help to her.. I have been told by people that this may give her a longer life span. Discussed with vet, but she had never heard of it. !! Said I could try it but not to hold out any hope for any effect. Would be most grateful for your advice.
Hi Hazel – Thank you for your question, we are sorry to hear about your dog’s diagnosis. We do not produce Golden Paste so would not be able to say whether this specific product would be of any help for your Bichon Frise. We do have Turmeric Tablets, however these are designed to help support the anti-inflammatory properties of the body and so we cannot say whether this would benefit your dog. I am sorry that we cannot be of more help.

Hi my 10 year old English Springer spaniel has be limping now for 4 months, he only limps when jogging along and not in walk he has had an X-ray and there is no sign of arthritis the vets thinks he has soft tissue damage in he’s right shoulder, he is on yumove advance and Cimalgex I have reduced he’s walk and is always walked on a short lead and on a lead in the garden he limps more in the early evening but only slightly no limping before after or during he’s walk, I want to stop the Cimalgex would he benefit taking turmeric along with he’s yumove ?
Hi Gillian – Oh poor boy! There aren't any known interactions between our Turmeric Tablets and Yumove however we would always recommend consulting with your vet before administering. The Turmeric Tablets support the natural anti-inflammatory processes so may help with any discomfort from any inflammation. We would also recommend our Glucosamine & Chondroitin Tablets as these help maintain healthy joints and promotes synovial fluid production (the fluid that lubricates joints). If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our advisors – email advice@dorwest.com or call 01308897272
Hi, I have a 12 y.o. 23 lb beagle mix with arthritis. He was on Carprofen for 3 months, but it elevated his liver enzymes, so we d/c'd that option. I'm looking at more natural options now. Unfortunately, he also has a three year old concern with urinary crystals, and is on a prescription diet for such, which has been a life saver in eliminating the issue that involved both Struvite and Oxalate forms. I know food grade turmeric is high in oxalates and would not be a good option for my dog, but I also heard that processed/extracted curcumin can be very low in oxalates and safe for a dog prone to urinary crystals. Have you tested your curcumin for oxalates by chance? Any words of wisdom on this issue? Thanks so much!!
Hi,
We use a powdered Turmeric extract in our tablets which is 95% curcuminoids, however we do not extract the curcuminoids on their own so could not say whether this would have a low or high oxalate level. There are no known precautions for these tablets in relation to urinary conditions however we always advise consulting your vet prior to use to make sure that they are suitable for each individual dog, especially if they have a known health concern.
My 10 years old cocker spaniel has been diagnosed with arthritis in one of her back legs. She is currently on steroid tablets for other health issues. Would the turmeric tablets interfere with this treatment.
Hi Jane – We do not recommend giving the Turmeric Tablets prior to an operation or if a dog is on anti-coagulant medication so it should be okay to use alongside the current medication. However we would recommend consulting your vet prior to use to make sure that it is suitable for your dog and the specific medication they are taking.
I have a 11 year old medium sized terrier diagnosed with Cushing syndrome. Read that turmeric had some success in treating this syndrome. Can you comment?
Hi Elke – Our Turmeric Tablets can help to support anti-inflammatory processes within the body and have not been used to help those with Cushings disease specifically. Unfortunately we would be unable to say whether it would or would not benefit those with this condition and would recommend contacting a veterinary professional regarding use.
